Galveston Officers Under Investigation for Alleged Assaults
Two correctional officers in Galveston County, Texas, have been relieved of duty after being accused of sexual assault by two female inmates, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) confirmed.
Timeline of Allegations
The first allegation was reported in March 2026, with a female inmate stating she had been sexually assaulted by two officers. TDCJ staff were immediately notified and launched an internal investigation.
Second Inmate Comes Forward
Shortly after, a second inmate reported a similar incident, alleging she was assaulted in January 2026. She came forward after hearing about the March allegation.
Details of the Allegations
Investigators noted that the second inmate’s account connected both officers to both reported incidents. She identified one officer by physical description and the other by name.
Advocates Highlight Systemic Concerns
Advocates for incarcerated individuals say these allegations underscore long-standing concerns regarding the treatment of women within the correctional system. Dr. Amite Dominick, founder of Texas Prisons Community Advocates, stated, “Women who are incarcerated are oftentimes the forgotten, overlooked population within a system that throws individuals away.”
Dr. Dominick further explained the power imbalance inherent in the situation, saying, “You’re looking at a power dynamic here. These are officers who control aspects of inmates’ lives, which can create fear about reporting abuse.”
Ongoing Investigations
As of April 2, 2026, no criminal charges have been filed. Both internal investigations by TDCJ and potential criminal investigations are ongoing.
