RALEIGH — NC State introduced Justin Gainey as its new men’s basketball coach at a press conference on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the program.

A Return to Raleigh

The event was attended by numerous NC State basketball legends, including Derek Whittenburg, Chris Corchianni, and T.J. Warren, demonstrating a strong show of support for the new head coach. University Chancellor Kevin Howell was also present as the band played the school fight song.

Gainey's Connection to NC State

Justin Gainey, a native of High Point, N.C., is a former four-year player for the Wolfpack under Herb Sendek. This deep connection to the university was a key factor in Athletic Director Chris Corrigan’s decision to hire him.

Corrigan's Remarks

“As a former captain, he knows what it takes to be a strong leader and what we need to do to take the next step,” Corrigan stated. “As a two-time NC State graduate, he understands the love that we all have for this university. Justin’s blood is in the bricks. We’re excited for the program and where you can go.”

A Dream Come True

Gainey expressed his profound gratitude and excitement upon taking the podium. He described the opportunity as a “surreal moment” and a “dream come true.”

“This is a surreal moment for me. It’s like a dream come true that still hasn’t fully set in,” Gainey said. “I’m just so excited to be here, to be in front of you. It’s home. I’m excited to be back home.”

Embracing the Wolfpack Culture

Gainey emphasized his understanding of NC State’s unique culture and tradition. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with leading the program and his commitment to honoring its history.

“This is a special place with proud tradition and I don’t take any of this lightly,” Gainey said. “I don’t take any of these responsibilities lightly. I know what comes with it. I was born here in North Carolina. I played here at NC State. I understand what being on Tobacco Road is all about... You’ve got to have a certain type of toughness to be here.”

Focus on Toughness

Throughout the press conference, Gainey repeatedly highlighted the importance of “toughness” as a core value for his program. He intends to build a team that is relentless and highly competitive.

“The thing I want to promise you is that you’re going to get my best effort every single day in every single thing that we do,” Gainey said. “We’re going to be relentless and my teams will reflect that relentless mindset.”

He referenced the 1983 championship team led by Derek Whittenburg as an example of the toughness he wants to instill in his players.

“As I think about the main characteristic of NC State, we’re tough,” Gainey said. “Think about Whittenburg and that team that won the championship. They had to come from the play-in game and win the ACC Championship to even get into the tournament. Tough.”
