Peru Presidential Election: Fujimori in the Lead
Peru is preparing for a pivotal presidential election this Sunday, April 12th, a moment of significant importance for a nation grappling with persistent political instability. The election will also include the selection of national and regional officials.
Fujimori's Strong Position in Polls
Pre-election polls consistently show former First Lady and Senator Keiko Fujimori as the frontrunner in the race. This would be her fourth attempt at the presidency, having previously run in 2011, 2016, and 2021.
Recent Polling Data
Surveys conducted between April 1st and 6th by Datum International, Ipsos, and CPI all point to Fujimori’s strong position. Datum International’s poll indicates she has 14.5% of the vote, followed by Carlos Alvarez (10.9%) and Rafael Lopez Aliaga (9.9%). Notably, 16.8% of voters remain undecided.
A History of Political Turmoil
Peru has experienced a remarkable level of political turnover in recent years, with nine presidents in the last decade. Ollanta Humala was the last president to complete a full term, leaving office in 2016. Current interim President José María Balcázar is expected to step down after the elected president assumes office on July 28th.
Fujimori's Platform and Political Background
Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori (who governed from 1990 to 2000), is campaigning on a platform of “order, economy, and social” pillars. Her economic recovery plan echoes her father’s approach, emphasizing strong government intervention, deregulation, technological innovation, fiscal discipline, and a social market economy.
Focus on Crime and Governance
Fujimori has also pledged to take a firm stance against crime and corruption. Given the diverse field of 35 candidates, a runoff election between the top two contenders is widely anticipated.
Election Regulations and Voter Participation
Peru’s electoral laws enforce a period of electoral silence, prohibiting the publication of election-related surveys in the week leading up to the election. Approximately 27 million eligible voters will participate, choosing not only the president but also 30 national-level senators, 130 congressmen, and 5 members of the regional Andean Parliament. Residents of Lima and Peruvians abroad will also vote for regional Senators.
