Early Entrepreneurial Roots
Scout Turner’s entrepreneurial journey began with a simple expectation from her mother: get a job at 16. Having grown up helping her mother at her pottery business, Turner was familiar with hard work. She often accompanied her mother to the studio during her elementary school years.
Launching a First Venture
As her 16th birthday neared, Turner discovered limited job opportunities for teenagers. Spotting an empty storefront near her school, she envisioned a pottery studio. She contacted a real estate agent, using her customer service skills to conceal her age, and developed a basic business plan.
Securing the Space and Support
Turner presented her business plan to her mother during lunch, requesting a tour of the space with the real estate agent. Despite not yet having her driver’s license, her mother assisted her in opening the studio, which she operated for approximately two years before attending college.
Financial Realities and Work Ethic
Turner was aware of her family’s financial situation, contrasting it with her peers whose parents held high-paying professions. Her mother had initially funded her first business with a credit card, emphasizing the importance of hard work and “sweat equity.” This understanding motivated Turner to seek employment as a teenager.
Balancing Work and Social Life
While her friends enjoyed typical teenage activities, Turner often found herself working shifts at her pottery studio. Her father would drive her to work, but she didn’t resent the sacrifices, recognizing the value of her entrepreneurial pursuits.
Corporate Aspirations and a Return to Small Business
Turner received a college scholarship to study entrepreneurship but initially aimed for a corporate career. Her mother, having also experienced corporate life, supported this ambition. Turner enjoyed the travel and financial freedom that came with her corporate role.
Driven by Financial Security
Turner has always been highly motivated by financial success, emphasizing that this drive doesn’t compromise her ethics. She is focused on building wealth to ensure her family’s comfort and future financial independence.
Building a Franchise Portfolio
Ultimately, Turner was drawn back to the fulfillment of small business ownership and the ability to build generational wealth. Today, she and her husband own multiple CertaPro Painters franchises, along with two massage franchises and an Amazing Lash studio.
Mentorship and Gratitude
At 31, Turner and her husband are working diligently to build a more flexible future. Her mother continues to serve as a valuable mentor, offering honest advice and guidance. Despite occasional regrets about balancing work and studies, Turner is grateful for the experiences that have shaped her into the entrepreneur she is today.
