NYPD detectives are actively searching for four masked perpetrators involved in the armed robbery and carjacking of a taxi driver in Lower Manhattan last week. The investigation is currently focused on locating these unidentified individuals responsible for the overnight crime.

Details of the Lower Manhattan Carjacking Incident

When and Where the Robbery Occurred

Law enforcement sources confirmed that the alarming incident took place early Monday morning, March 23, around 1:30 a.m. The location was specifically in front of 50 2nd Ave, situated in the East Village neighborhood.

The Victim and the Confrontation

The victim, a 51-year-old cab driver, was taking a scheduled break from his shift while sitting inside his vehicle. Four unidentified men, primarily dressed in black attire, approached the taxi and requested transportation to a specified destination.

Forcible Theft of Vehicle

When the driver denied the request for a ride, one of the suspects immediately produced a firearm. This suspect then forcibly removed the driver from the vehicle. Following this action, all four suspects entered the taxi and fled the scene, leaving the victim behind.

Vehicle Recovery and Surveillance Footage

Using a tracking device installed in the cab, police successfully located the stolen vehicle later that day in Newark, New Jersey. Authorities subsequently released surveillance video footage capturing the suspects entering a store.

The released video clearly shows at least three of the four suspects wearing blackface masks during their movements.

Descriptions of the Perpetrators

Three of the suspects were last observed wearing black sweatshirts, dark-colored pants, and black sneakers. The fourth individual was seen wearing a light-colored sweatshirt, a black jacket, and was carrying a bookbag.
