Florida Woman Charged with Grand Theft and Property Dealing
A woman in Summerfield, Florida, near The Villages, has been arrested and charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Candice Meshelle Mackey, 40, allegedly occupied a home without the owner’s permission and then sold appliances from the residence.
Details of the Squatting Incident
According to an arrest affidavit from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, homeowner Denise Lombardi discovered Mackey squatting in her property a couple of months ago. Lombardi stated that Mackey had been repeatedly asked to leave but remained at the residence.
How the Theft Was Discovered
A neighbor alerted Lombardi after purchasing a Frigidaire washer and dryer set from Mackey for $150. The neighbor later discovered the appliances were not Mackey’s and attempted to get a refund, but was unsuccessful. The appliances were identified as belonging to the home by another witness.
Conflicting Statements and Arrest
Mackey initially told deputies she had purchased the appliances after being released from jail. However, investigators noted she provided inconsistent information regarding the purchase and could not provide proof of ownership.
James, Lombardi’s nephew, reportedly invited Mackey to stay at the home without permission. Despite receiving a notice to vacate by March 31st, Mackey remained on the property. She was initially ordered to leave the property in December.
Mackey was booked into the Marion County Jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond. She faces charges related to the theft of property valued between $750 and $5,000.
