In a recent demonstration, Figure AI’s humanoid robot, Figure 03, captivated Shawn Ryan with its advanced balance, grip, and smooth walking capabilities. Host of the Shawn Ryan Show, Ryan interacted directly with the AI-powered machine, gaining firsthand insight into the future of robotics.
Figure 03: A New Generation of Humanoid Robots
Developed by robotics startup Figure AI, Figure 03 is designed to replicate many human tasks, ranging from household chores like folding laundry and washing dishes to more complex roles in factories and logistics centers. CEO and founder Brett Adcock explained the company’s vision to build general-purpose humanoid robots for widespread use.
AI-Powered Movement and Design
The demonstration video showcases the robot walking alongside Shawn Ryan, entirely guided by artificial intelligence. Standing approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing between 130-135 pounds, Figure 03 closely mirrors human proportions. Unlike traditional robotics relying on pre-programmed movements, this robot utilizes a neural network to control its locomotion.
Dexterous Hands and Robust Sensors
Figure 03 boasts around 40 joints powered by electric motors and equipped with sensors for maintaining balance and performing tasks. Cameras embedded in the palms, combined with tactile sensors in each fingertip, allow the robot to visually track and grasp objects with precision. The robot can lift up to 40 pounds and even fold a T-shirt, according to Adcock.
Real-World Applications and Partnerships
Founded in 2022, Figure AI is focused on developing robots to address labor shortages in industries like manufacturing and logistics. The company is already collaborating with major partners, including BMW, testing the robots in manufacturing environments. They are also working with logistics and real estate organizations to integrate the robots into industrial workflows.
Power and Charging
The robot’s computing hardware, including GPUs and battery systems, is housed within its torso. A full charge provides approximately four to five hours of operation, with a recharge time of around one hour. Notably, Figure 03 charges wirelessly through pads embedded in its feet.
Scaling Production and Future Vision
Figure AI has established a manufacturing facility capable of producing one robot every 90 minutes, with plans for significant scaling. Adcock envisions a future where humanoid robots are as commonplace as smartphones, potentially reaching a “robot for every human.” He likened the development process to the early days of smartphone technology, anticipating rapid advancements with each new iteration.
Recent Public Appearance
Last week, a Figure humanoid robot was showcased at a White House event focused on artificial intelligence, demonstrating its capabilities to attendees. This public appearance highlights the growing momentum and mainstream attention surrounding humanoid robotics.
