Feds Raid Ilhan Omar's Washington Home in Immigration Fraud Investigation 22 Days Before Election Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington residence as part of a federal criminal probe into alleged immigration fraud, including claims she married her brother. The Minnesota Democrat denounced the raid as politically motivated. Federal agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant at the Washington home of Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday, just 22 days before Election Day, as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation into her immigration history. Federal Agents Search Rep Ilhan Omar HomeJustice Department officials confirmed to Newsweek that Homeland Security Investigations agents carried out the search. The agency said the enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but provided no additional details. The search warrant listed a series of potential immigration crimes under investigation, according to the New York Times, including false statements and fraud in immigration paperwork, as well as a general conspiracy charge. Omar denounced the raid as politically motivated hours after agents searched her home.Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement, Omar wrote Monday on X. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced. Jacklyn Rogers, Omar's communications director, characterized the raid as an outrageous abuse of power. For a decade, Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed Omar married her brother to help him enter the United States. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said at the Republican National Committee's midterm convention last month: We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States. Omar has repeatedly and strenuously denied the unsubstantiated allegation, calling it bigoted lies. There has never been any public proof of a sibling relationship between Omar and her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. The allegation centers on Omar's 2009 marriage to Elmi, which critics claim was intended to help him obtain U.S. immigration benefits. Omar divorced Elmi and later officially married Hirsi, before divorcing Hirsi and marrying political consultant Tim Mynett, her current husband. In her memoir, Omar says nothing of substance about Elmi. She does not use his name and claims she spent very little time with him. She also does not name any of her siblings, giving the impression of wanting to provide as little information about her family background as possible. Omar, 44, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and fled the country's civil war with her family when she was 8 years old. They spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before migrating to the United States in the 1990s, according to her official House biography. In 1997, she moved to Minneapolis with her family. As a teenager, her grandfather inspired her to get involved in politics.Ilhan Omar Political Background And CareerBefore running for office, she worked as a community educator at the University of Minnesota, was a Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and served as a Senior Policy Aide for the Minneapolis City Council. Omar was elected to the House in 2018, becoming the first African refugee to serve in Congress, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota and one of just two Muslim-American women ever voted into the chamber along with Michigan's Rashida Tlaib. She represents Minnesota's 5th District, including Minneapolis. Omar's father was Nur Omar Mohamed, a Somali educator and former military officer who helped raise her after her mother died when Omar was a young child. Her father and grandfather played important roles in her upbringing, according to the Congressional Black Caucus. Mohamed later worked as a taxi driver and for the U.S. Postal Service and died in June 2020.An admiring obituary in the Sahan Journal described Mohamed as an esteemed senior officer in the Somali National Army. The article said her father joined the Somali National Army after obtaining a military education in Russia. Thousands of Somali students in that decade received scholarships from the Soviet Union to train as medical doctors, technicians and military specialists. When he returned to Somalia, the obituary continued, he began his climb in the military hierarchy, eventually becoming a colonel.A friend told the outlet that he led a regiment during the Somali-Ethiopian war in the late 1970s. Nur played a significant role in the war, the source noted. He was one of the officers who were recognized for their work. Omar is the youngest of seven siblings, although the specific names of her brothers and sisters have not been publicized.Allegedly, the future congresswoman, her father and one of her sisters used the false name Omar to come to the United States as part of another Somali family that won asylum here, while her siblings under different names got asylum in the UK. There is also a question of whether Omar was too old to automatically get naturalization when her father obtained it.It is possible federal investigators are actually looking at the circumstances of her father's arrival here, which is outlined only vaguely in Omar's memoir. She refers to him as an educator, a description that seems at odds with his military background. There is also the possibility that Omar is being coy because her father represented himself as a teacher, rather than as a Soviet-trained colonel in a blood-soaked military, to US immigration authorities.Husband Tim Mynett And Family Wealth DetailsOmar married her third husband, political consultant and businessman Tim Mynett, in March 2020. He graduated from the University at Albany in 2003 with a degree in political science and went on to work in political consulting and fundraising. Mynett later became a partner in E Street Group, a consulting firm that provided digital advertising, fundraising and campaign services to Omar's 2019-2020 reelection campaign.Mynett and Omar announced news of their marriage on Instagram with a photograph of themselves wearing wedding rings, with the lawmaker describing their relationship as having evolved from political partners to life partners. The couple's personal relationship attracted scrutiny because of E Street Group's work for Omar's campaign. A complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission alleged improper use and reporting of campaign funds.Omar, Mynett and the campaign denied wrongdoing, and the FEC subsequently found no reason to believe that campaign funds had been converted to personal use. Mynett has also since pursued other business ventures, including investment-related activities and a California winery that was shut down in April, weeks after Congressional Republicans demanded answers about the reported wealth of the Minnesota Democrat's family.Omar had previously filed a 2024 financial disclosure that put her family's assets at between $6 million and $30 million, a surge from the previous year that would have placed her among the wealthiest Democrats in the House. The bulk of the wealth stemmed from a Santa Rosa, California-based winery, eStCru LLC, which was co-owned by Mynett.California business records show the winery shut down on April 4, two months after House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer wrote to Mynett asking for financial records. Much of Ilhan Omar's family story remains a black box, but the federal investigation may reveal more. The Trump administration, which has repeatedly over-reached in pursuit of its political opponents, does not necessarily deserve the benefit of the doubt, although questions have swirled around Omar's background for years. She has always responded with angry, uninformative dismissals, even when the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, not exactly a right-wing news source, has made inquiries. If she is being smeared, Omar should sit down with a neutral journalist and walk through the details of all this with as many documents as she can muster. That seems unlikely. But it is a certainty that she will continue to excoriate the United States, whether it is the country that welcomed her as a penniless refugee, or the one that tries to denaturalize her for alleged immigration fraud.
