FDA Investigates E. coli Outbreak Linked to Cheddar Cheese
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating an outbreak of E. coli infections connected to Raw Farm brand cheddar cheese. The investigation began last month after reports of illnesses surfaced among consumers.
Raw Farm Issues Recall “Under Protest”
Raw Farm is conducting a voluntary recall of its cheddar cheese “under protest.” The company stated this action is intended to establish a “path forward” while maintaining its position on product safety. The recall is specifically limited to Raw Farm-brand cheddar cheese; no other products are affected.
Outbreak Details and Findings
As of last week, nine individuals have been reported ill as part of the expanding outbreak, including children. According to the FDA, seven of the eight individuals interviewed by health officials reported consuming Raw Farm products.
- Two individuals reported consuming Raw Farm milk in 2025.
- Five individuals reported consuming or being served Raw Farm raw cheddar cheese in 2026.
Genetic sequencing of the E. coli strains isolated from the patients indicates a close genetic relationship, suggesting a common source of infection.
FDA Authority and Ongoing Investigation
The FDA has the authority to mandate recalls if a product poses a risk of serious injury or death. However, the agency first requests voluntary compliance from companies. Currently, the FDA is actively inspecting Raw Farm’s facilities.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the FDA has not yet detected the presence of E. coli bacteria in product testing. The situation underscores the challenges associated with regulating raw food products and the importance of robust food safety measures.
Raw Milk Regulations Vary by State
Regulations surrounding raw milk sales differ significantly across states. Some states permit retail sales, while others restrict sales to farm locations. Other approaches include “cow-shares” and limitations on consumption to farm owners and visitors.
