It’s International Fact-Checking Day, an opportune moment to address the growing challenge of identifying AI-generated content. AI-created misinformation is spreading rapidly, making it harder than ever to discern truth from falsehood, especially in breaking news situations.

The Rise of AI-Generated Misinformation

Misinformation created with artificial intelligence is being shared at an unprecedented rate from countless sources. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which monitors disinformation and online extremism, has been analyzing social media activity surrounding the Iran war. Their research revealed that a group of X (formerly Twitter) accounts consistently posting AI-generated content collectively amassed over one billion views since the conflict began.

Remarkably, this widespread dissemination was achieved by approximately two dozen accounts, many of which possessed verified blue checkmarks.

Identifying AI-Generated Content: What to Look For

Visual Clues

Early indicators of AI-generated images often included noticeable flaws. These could range from an incorrect number of fingers on a person to voices being out of sync with lip movements, or nonsensical text. Objects were also frequently distorted or missing essential parts.

While these clues are becoming less common as the technology advances, inconsistencies remain a key indicator. Look for elements that appear and disappear within a video, or actions that defy the laws of physics. Overly polished or unnaturally shiny images can also be suspect.

Reverse Image Search & Verification

AI-generated images are often widely shared, making it crucial to trace their origin. A reverse image search is a simple yet effective method for doing so. For videos, taking a screenshot before performing the search is recommended.

This search can lead to the account that originally generated the AI content, an older image being misrepresented, or other revealing information.

Seeking Multiple Sources

Authenticating images requires consulting multiple verified sources. This could include fact-checks from reputable news organizations, statements from public figures, or insights from misinformation experts. These sources often have access to advanced detection techniques and information unavailable to the general public.

AI Detection Tools & Watermarks

Numerous AI detection tools can provide a starting point for analysis, but their accuracy isn’t guaranteed. Google’s Gemini app incorporates SynthID, an invisible digital watermarking tool, into AI-generated or altered images. Other AI tools are adding visible watermarks, though these are often easily removed. Therefore, the absence of a watermark doesn’t confirm an image’s authenticity.

The Importance of Critical Thinking

Ultimately, a return to basic critical thinking skills is essential. Before sharing content, pause, take a breath, and verify its authenticity. Those spreading misinformation often exploit emotional reactions and pre-existing biases.

Examining the comments section can also provide valuable clues, as other users may have identified inconsistencies or located the original source. However, it’s important to remember that definitively proving whether an image is AI-generated can be impossible, so maintaining a healthy level of skepticism is crucial.
