The ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC co-host Savannah Guthrie, continues to draw attention from experts. Former Pima County SWAT commander Bob Krieger recently shared his perspective on a key detail from the scene: the open back doors of Guthrie's residence.
Theories on the Abduction Scene
The Significance of Open Doors
During an interview with NewsNation reporter Brian Entin, Krieger suggested that the kidnappers likely propped open the back doors of the 84-year-old woman's home. He posited this was done to ensure a quick entry and exit strategy.
Krieger explained that leaving doors open eliminates the risk of an exit being blocked. “Just one less thing you have to think about, opening the door, you don’t want it closing behind you and maybe automatically locking and you not knowing how to unlock it to get out,” he stated.
Possible Exit Strategy and Terrain
The former commander speculated that Nancy Guthrie was likely restrained and carried out of the residence. He noted this could have been accomplished by a single individual or multiple suspects.
Krieger believes the open doors were crucial due to the challenging desert terrain surrounding the home. Bloodstains belonging to Guthrie were found near the front of the house, suggesting the perpetrators exited that way. “There’s no way they’re bringing her back this way. If they got there that way, they clearly had to go out the front,” Krieger asserted.
Details Surrounding Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance
Timeline and Initial Findings
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 after a family member drove her home following dinner. She was reported missing around noon the following day when she failed to appear for virtual church services at a friend's house.
Investigators discovered bloodstains confirmed to be hers at her home north of Tucson, Arizona. While her doorbell camera was disabled, the FBI managed to recover images showing an armed, masked man outside the residence on the morning she vanished.
Clues and Official Stance
Authorities are officially treating the case as a kidnapping, although concrete leads remain limited and no suspect has been publicly named. Last month, authorities confirmed that DNA from gloves found two miles away did not match the FBI database or DNA from Guthrie's property.
Savannah Guthrie revealed details not officially confirmed by investigators, including that her mother was taken in her pajamas, without shoes or necessary medicine. She emphasized that her mother, due to her poor health, could not have wandered off or propped the doors open herself.
Family Appeal for Information
A Plea to the Community
The case is now two months old, and the Guthrie family issued a statement on March 21, urging the public for renewed focus. They stressed that “no detail is too small” in finding their mother.
The family believes the key to resolution lies within the Tucson community. They asked residents to review memories and records, especially around the key timelines of January 31, the early morning of February 1, and the evening of January 11.
Reward Information
The family is offering a substantial reward of up to $1 million for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery. The FBI is also maintaining a separate $100,000 reward for information leading to the whereabouts of the suspect or suspects.
