The globally recognized Eurovision Song Contest is embarking on a significant international expansion by launching an Asian iteration later this year. This move marks the first official expansion of the music competition into the Asian continent.
Eurovision Song Contest Asia 2026 Details
Confirmed Participants and Timeline
The inaugural Eurovision Song Contest Asia 2026 has already confirmed participants from at least ten nations across the region. These countries include Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Organizers anticipate that more countries will join the roster before the grand finale scheduled for November.
A Meaningful Expansion
Martin Green, the director of the contest, stated that this expansion is particularly significant. "As we mark the 70th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, it feels especially meaningful to open this next chapter with Asia, a region rich in culture, creativity and talent," Green announced on Tuesday.
Bangkok as the Host City
Bangkok, Thailand, has been selected as the host city for this new venture. Chuwit Sirivajjakul, a representative from the Thailand Tourism Authority, expressed enthusiasm for the choice.
Sirivajjakul highlighted Bangkok's unique position, noting that the city "has always been a place where cultures come together, where music fills the air, and where celebration is part of everyday life."
Context of the Main Contest
Upcoming European Event and Boycotts
The main Eurovision Song Contest, featuring 35 competing countries, is still scheduled to proceed in Vienna in May. However, this year's European event is facing notable absences.
Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain are all boycotting the contest this year. The reason cited for these withdrawals is discord surrounding Israel’s participation in the competition.
Politics and Eurovision History
The contest consistently attempts to prioritize pop music over political matters. Despite these efforts, it has frequently become entangled in global events over the years. For instance, Russia was expelled from the competition in 2022 following its actions.
