The total was reached as of 3 p.m. Friday, with donations still open until Monday. The annual Terry Fox Run, held in September, commemorates Terry Fox's 1980 cross-Canada run for cancer research. Terry Fox Foundation FundraisingThe Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $850 million since 1980, when Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. After running 5,373 km, cancer returned to his lungs, halting his journey. He died in 1981. The foundation continues to fund cancer research through annual runs across Canada.Avalon Junior High School's run took place on Friday. Last year, the school raised $41,000 for the foundation, ranking first in Alberta and seventh in Canada among fundraising schools. This year's total of $111,194.90 is more than double last year's amount.School Exceeds Fundraising GoalThe school, with approximately 570 students, set an ambitious goal of $100,000. Principal Kirstin Johns-Bell expressed amazement at the students' achievement. She noted that some teams raised over $13,000 each. Johns-Bell praised the students as future leaders and called the effort inspiring.To motivate students, Johns-Bell agreed to get a tattoo if the school neared its fundraising goal. Since the goal was surpassed, students now have the opportunity to submit artwork to inspire the tattoo design. The plan is for Johns-Bell to get the tattoo in the school gym so students can witness it.Student and Community InvolvementGrade 8 student Colter Southworth described the run as the best day of the year. He said it is a beautiful thing to come together, celebrate, and make a difference. The event included prizes donated by community sponsors for the top three runners in each grade, including a frozen turkey, as well as prizes for top fundraisers.Donations remain open until Monday, so the final total could increase further. Johns-Bell said the current amount is enough to place the school first in Canada among fundraising schools. The annual Terry Fox Runs are held across Canada, usually in September, to honor Terry Fox's legacy and support cancer research.
