A recent report has surfaced detailing concerns within the Philadelphia Eagles organization regarding quarterback Jalen Hurts. The ESPN report alleges issues with Hurts’ body language, coachability, and overall buy-in, suggesting these factors are impacting team morale.
Report Details Concerns About Jalen Hurts
According to sources cited in the ESPN report, Hurts is perceived as being “closed off” and “continually fights” being under center. He’s also reportedly “pushed back on changes” to the team’s offensive scheme. The report indicates that Hurts’ approach has contributed to the Eagles’ offense becoming “calcified,” and that he sometimes hesitates to take risks, particularly against zone coverage.
Cowherd Draws Parallels to Russell Wilson
On Wednesday’s edition of “The Herd,” Colin Cowherd discussed the report, stating it reminded him of the situation with Russell Wilson during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. “This is exactly what I was told,” Cowherd said. “When people think their jobs are in trouble…they’ll talk.”
Cowherd elaborated, explaining that the situation feels similar to Wilson’s tenure in Seattle, where the quarterback received much of the credit while the roster was often blamed for losses. He noted the stacked roster and the tendency to attribute blame elsewhere when the team underperformed.
Eagles' Performance and Offensive Struggles
Last season, the Eagles finished with an 11-6 record, winning the NFC East but losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC wild-card round. Despite a strong individual stat line for Hurts – 3,224 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and a 98.5 passer rating – the team’s overall offensive performance was underwhelming.
- Total Yards: 24th in the NFL
- Passing Yards: 23rd in the NFL
- Points: 19th in the NFL
- Rushing Yards: 18th in the NFL
Relationship with A.J. Brown
The report also highlights a potentially strained relationship between Hurts and star wide receiver A.J. Brown. Brown’s suggestion to fans to “get rid” of Hurts in fantasy football during the regular season raised eyebrows. Brown recorded 1,003 receiving yards in the 2025 season, his lowest total since 2021.
Coaching Changes and Hurts' Contract
The Eagles have experienced frequent changes at offensive coordinator in recent years. Sean Mannion is the current offensive coordinator, replacing Kevin Patullo, who followed Kellen Moore (now head coach of the New Orleans Saints) in the role. Prior to Patullo, Brian Johnson and Shane Steichen also served as offensive coordinators.
Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract extension after the 2022 season. Cowherd pointed to this large contract, along with Hurts’ media presence, as further parallels to the Wilson situation in Seattle. “Who got $255 million? Who’s getting the commercials? Who’s getting the magazine covers? It feels very Russell Wilson in Seattle,” he stated.
Since becoming the full-time starting quarterback, Hurts has a 57-25 regular season record and a 6-4 postseason record with the Eagles. He was the Super Bowl LIX MVP and has led the team to two Super Bowl appearances.
