Dr. Martens Celebrates 65th Anniversary of the 1461 Shoe
Dr. Martens is celebrating the 65th anniversary of the 1461 shoe, the second style to come off its production line, with a limited-edition launch. The 1461 is well-known for its durability, comfort, and versatility.
The History of the 1461
The shoe’s name references April 1, 1961, mirroring the naming convention of the earlier 1460 boot. Featuring the iconic air-cushioned sole and signature yellow welt stitch, the 1461 has become a staple for Dr. Martens wearers over the decades.
Limited-Edition Release Details
To mark the anniversary, the Dr. Martens Made in England factory has crafted a limited-edition version of the 1461. It’s constructed from Classic Calf leather sourced from C. F. Stead, a Leeds-based tannery, and incorporates Dr. Martens’ signature design elements.
Craftsmanship and Materials
The shoe boasts a “sepia gray” tone achieved through a blend of natural oils and waxes, creating a rich color that will develop character with age. Details include antique gold eyelets, round wax laces, and a special-edition swing tag recognizing the Cobb Lane factory in England.
Iconic Design Features
The shoe retains the original Goodyear-welted construction, air-cushioned sole, and signature grooving pattern. It also features the 1461’s distinctive double stitch and the brand’s famous yellow welt stitching. This release is the third limited-edition 1461 shoe from the Northamptonshire factory this year.
Expanding the Sepia Gray Collection
In addition to the 1461, Dr. Martens is extending the use of the sepia gray Classic Calf leather to the 1460 style.
A Legacy of Style and Durability
Ramona Riedzewski, Dr. Martens head of archive, stated, “2026 marks 65 years since the first 1461 shoe rolled off the production line in Wollaston, Northamptonshire. For over six decades, this classic, yet instantly recognisable silhouette has moved far beyond its workwear origins — worn for school, work, interviews, gigs, weddings and every milestone in between.”
Riedzewski continued, “Built with Dr. Martens craftsmanship, durability and design, the three eyelet 1461 shoe has been passed down through generations, earning its own cultural significance alongside the iconic 1460 boot.”
