A new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed the lives of more than 60 people, with hundreds more suspected of having the disease. The outbreak has been primarily recorded in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, with additional suspected cases in Bunia, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Ebola's Deadly Return to DRC
The latest outbreak marks the DRC's 17th since the disease first emerged in the country in 1976. The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or semen. Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headaches, and a sore throat, which can develop into severe bleeding and organ failure. The disease is rare but severe and often fatal.
According to the Africa CDC, four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation. This outbreak comes around five months after the DRC's last Ebola outbreak was declared over after 43 deaths.
The Ongoing Battle Against Ebola in Ituri
The new outbreak will create more worry for the Central African country, which has already been decimated by warring armed groups in the east, including the M23 rebel group, which launched a rapid assault in January last year and has since occupied key cities. ituri, in particular, is also battling violence from the so-called Islamic State-linked Allied Democratic Force militant group, which has killed dozens there and in other parts of the east.
Ituri is in a remote part of Congo with relatively poor road networks, and is more than 620 miles from the nation's capital, Kinshasa. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa's second-largest country by land area, often faces logistical challenges in responding to disease outbreaks. During last year's outbreak, which lasted three months, the World Health Organisation initially faced significant challenges in delivering vaccines due to limited access and scarce funds.
Ebola's Historical Impact in DRC
An Ebola outbreak from 2018 to 2020 in eastern Congo killed more than 1,000 people. The DRC has a long history of battling the disease , with each outbreak presenting unique challenges. The country's ongoing conflict and poor infrastructure have made it difficult to contain the spread of the virus.
According to the Africa CDC, the latest outbreak is a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Ebola in the region. The agency has called for increased vigilance and support to help contain the spread of the virus .
Unanswered Questions and Concerns
While the Africa CDC has reported on the outbreak, several questions remain unanswered.. What is the exact number of suspected cases in Bunia? How will the ongoing conflict in the east impact the response to the outbreak? What steps are being taken to ensure the timely delivery of vaccines and other medical supplies?
As the DRC grapples with this latest Ebola outbreak, the international community will be watching closely to see how the country responds to this ongoing public health crisis.
