Jury deliberations began Wednesday morning in the trial of Guy Rivera, who is accused of fatally shooting New York Police Department Detective Jonathan Diller in March 2024.
Charges and Potential Sentences
Rivera faces charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of Diller’s partner, Sergeant Sasha Rosen, and multiple weapons possession offenses. Judge Michael Aloise has instructed the jury that they may also consider a conviction on the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter in the first degree.
Understanding the Charges
The first-degree murder charge carries a potential sentence of life in prison without parole. Aggravated manslaughter in the first degree, however, requires proof of intent to cause serious injury resulting in death, and carries a potential sentence of 20 years to life in prison.
The Shooting Incident
According to police reports, Rivera was a passenger in a vehicle when he allegedly fired a gun at Detective Diller through the car window. The shooting occurred during an encounter with law enforcement officials.
The case is now in the hands of the jury, who will determine Rivera’s guilt or innocence on the charges presented. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
