DHS Fires Back at Jimmy Kimmel Over Secretary Mullin Mockery
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly criticized late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for making light of Secretary Markwayne Mullin's blue-collar history. A DHS spokesperson issued a statement to Fox News Digital defending Mullin’s career progression from his family's plumbing business to a high-ranking Cabinet position.
The agency asserted that Secretary Mullin embodies the best aspects of working-class America. They stated, "Secretary Mullin represents the best of blue-collar America, and failed comedian Jimmy Kimmel chooses to ridicule him for it," according to the DHS statement.
The Origin of the Controversy
The dispute ignited after Kimmel targeted Mullin’s qualifications during his show the previous week. Kimmel drew comparisons between the former Senator and the iconic Nintendo character, Mario, who is also a plumber.
Kimmel remarked on air, "He's the now-former senator of Oklahoma. Before he was elected to the Senate, Markwayne Mullin was a low-level MMA fighter and a plumber. That's right. We have a plumber protecting us from terrorism now. It worked for Super Mario. Why not Markwayne?"
Mullin's Career Trajectory Detailed
Secretary Mullin's path included attending college on a wrestling scholarship before he left to manage his family's plumbing business due to his father's illness. Prior to his appointment as Homeland Security Secretary, Mullin served Oklahoma constituents in both the U.S. House and Senate for more than a decade.
DHS highlighted this unique journey in their defense: "In what other country could a young plumber from rural Oklahoma get fed up one day, run for Congress, serve his community in the House and Senate, and then be called to serve in the president’s Cabinet to protect the homeland?"
Kimmel Defends and Clarifies Remarks
Kimmel addressed the ensuing backlash during his monologue on Thursday, seeking to clarify his intent. He maintained that his issue was not with Mullin’s past profession itself.
The comedian stated, "Let me make this very clear, I’m not upset that the head of Homeland Security used to be a plumber. I’m upset that he isn’t still a plumber." Kimmel argued that conservative commentators were misrepresenting his joke, insisting he was not insulting plumbers generally.
He further explained his reasoning: "I wouldn’t put a plumber in charge of Homeland Security for the same reason I wouldn’t call a five-star general to pull a rat out of my toilet. OK? We all have our areas of expertise," Kimmel concluded.
Support for the New Secretary
The DHS statement also referenced supportive comments made by President Donald Trump on "The Five" on Thursday. Trump described Mullin as "country smart" and highly respected by his peers.
Secretary Mullin was officially sworn in as the head of DHS last week, following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate. A representative for Jimmy Kimmel did not provide an immediate response when asked for further comment.
