A fire on Wednesday led to the evacuation of a historic building owned by Wayne State University in Detroit. The incident occurred at the Maccabees Building, located along Woodward Avenue, just north of downtown.
Fire Contained, No Injuries Reported
Video footage from local television stations showed thick, black smoke billowing from the top of the 14-story structure. Wayne State University confirmed via social media that the fire, which originated on the 11th floor, was successfully contained.
Building History and Use
The Maccabees Building is a nearly century-old landmark designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn. Wayne State has owned the building for over 20 years, utilizing it for offices including the Computer Science Department and African American Studies programs.
The building holds a significant place in broadcasting history, having housed early radio and TV studios. Notably, “The Lone Ranger” and “The Green Hornet” radio programs were broadcast from the Maccabees Building starting in the 1930s.
Authorities believe the fire likely started within the building’s heating and cooling system. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
