DeSantis: Learjet crash in Greenacres killed 9 and displaced 600 residents A Learjet crashed into a Florida mobile home community, killing all nine aboard and forcing about 600 residents to evacuate as investigators probe the scene. A Learjet crashed into a Florida mobile home park and exploded into a fireball on Sunday, killing all nine people aboard and forcing roughly 600 residents of an adjacent community to evacuate, officials said. Gov. Ron DeSantis and local officials spoke at a rain-soaked news conference Sunday evening outside a beauty supply store at the corner of Kelly Drive and South Military Trail in Greenacres, near the crash site. DeSantis described the impact as cataclysmic. He said the plane looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road.Ground Injuries Confirmed None After CrashHe said debris was strewn over a significant distance. Miraculously, officials said there was no evidence that anyone on the ground was injured or killed. DeSantis said there were no reports of ground deaths or injuries apart from the people on the plane. He said the crash was a jarring thing to see.It was like a missile coming down and a massive explosion, with debris going everywhere, he said. He added that having those people on board was a tragic way to see people pass away and offered thoughts and prayers to their families. Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores, whose district includes the crash site, said about 600 residents of a nearby mobile home community were being relocated because the entrance to their neighborhood was next to the wreckage.Flores said the area is a crime scene and people cannot stay there while it is investigated. He said his main concern was ensuring affected residents have shelter and food by nightfall, and he said nearby businesses would be shut down for the near future. The county was preparing two shelters for displaced residents, with Palm Tran buses ready to transport them once the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office authorized the evacuation. The American Red Cross was also on standby.Extensive Damage To Road And Mobile CommunityFlores said the main entrance to the mobile community was completely decimated and that damage to Military Trail was extensive. He described a massive crater on Military and warned that the southbound side could remain closed for at least a month. He said he did not see that side of the road opening in the next 30 days. County officials said an alternate traffic pattern was being developed, with additional information expected Monday.DeSantis said the Florida Department of Transportation was already on scene and would assist with road repairs and traffic solutions. He cautioned that road closures could continue while the investigation unfolds and said local officials are sometimes at the mercy of what federal investigators are doing. During the news conference, a county official also announced plans to sign an emergency declaration requesting state assistance. Officials said the crash damaged nearby infrastructure, potentially affecting water and other services.DeSantis said federal investigators were expected to arrive Sunday night. The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that it has initiated a go-team to arrive on the scene Sunday night and Monday morning. Shocking dashcam video captured the jet rapidly plummeting straight into the earth and exploding into a massive plume of fire and smoke. Witnesses reported hearing a thunderous boom for miles.Air Traffic Audio Captures Plane Final MomentsHarrowing air traffic control audio captured the final moments inside the doomed plane. A pilot was heard uttering the last words, holy f---, we are out of time. When asked about the aircraft's rapid descent, DeSantis suggested something may have gone wrong before the plane struck the ground. He said that to see the way it descended, one can make the inference that something happened in the air that was a big problem.Rep. Debra Tendrich said fire rescue responded immediately to the crash site and did an incredible job. AccuWeather meteorologists said there was heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the crash area, with rainfall rates estimated at roughly 0.25 inches per hour. The combination of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility created challenging weather conditions in the area, said Alan Reppert, an AccuWeather senior meteorologist.Heavy Rain Created Challenging Weather ConditionsHe said visibility could deteriorate significantly as heavier bands of rain moved through, meaning conditions were not necessarily consistent from one moment to the next. None of the victims had been publicly identified as of Sunday night. DeSantis said he did not know if any of them were Floridians and said there would obviously be more information in the hours and days to come.DeSantis said that we do not know, and that there could have been more people in harm's way had they not stabilized the way they did. He said the scene remained active as federal investigators prepared to take over the wreckage examination. Officials said the priority remained helping displaced residents, restoring traffic routes and supporting the investigation. They said further updates would be provided as crews assess the crater, the damaged roadway and the surrounding neighborhood.
