‘Crawl’ Sees Renewed Interest
While Sam Raimi returned to directing horror films recently, he remained active as a producer for over a decade. During this period, he oversaw several successful horror projects, including The Possession (grossing over $80 million worldwide), the Evil Dead reboot (nearly $100 million), Poltergeist (around $95 million), and Don’t Breathe (over $150 million).
Ghost House Pictures’ Success
Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures consistently delivered results with these films, all produced on budgets ranging from $10 million to $35 million. Among these productions, Crawl emerged as a sleeper hit and is now gaining traction with at-home viewers.
About ‘Crawl’
Directed by Alexandre Aja, known for High Tension and Piranha 3D, Crawl stars Kaya Scodelario (Skins, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) alongside Barry Pepper. The film is set against the backdrop of a Category 5 hurricane in Florida.
Synopsis
Crawl centers on a young woman, her father, and their dog who find themselves trapped in the crawl space of their home during a hurricane. They must then fight for survival against a pack of aggressive alligators.
Box Office and Critical Reception
Released in 2019, Crawl grossed over $90 million worldwide on a $15 million budget. The film has received positive reviews, currently holding an 84% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus describes the film as “An action-packed creature feature that’s fast, terrifying, and benefits greatly from a completely game Kaya Scodelario, Crawl is a fun throwback with just enough self-awareness to work.”

Sam Raimi continues to produce survival thrillers, including 2024’s Don’t Move, which also received positive reviews, and Send Help, released earlier this year, grossing nearly $95 million against a $40 million budget.
