The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has taken action to protect consumers by securing the removal of hazardous male-to-male extension cords from major online retailers. This move addresses the significant risks these cords pose, including potential electrocution and fire hazards.

Dangerous Design and Backfeeding Risks

The CPSC’s investigation revealed that these extension cords, characterized by two male ends and exposed prongs, present a serious safety threat. The exposed prongs can become energized when plugged in, posing an immediate danger to anyone handling them.

A particularly hazardous practice associated with these cords is “backfeeding” – supplying power from a generator to a home’s electrical system. This practice is extremely dangerous and can lead to severe injury, death, or fire.

Consumer Warning and Disposal Instructions

Consumers are strongly urged to stop using these cords immediately and dispose of them safely. The cords, often colored blue, red, or yellow with three-prong black plugs, are manufactured in China.

The CPSC emphasizes careful unplugging and avoiding contact with exposed prongs during disposal. These cords are often referred to as “suicide cords” due to the potential for fatal outcomes.

Generator Use and Carbon Monoxide Concerns

The short length of these cords also increases the risk of operating generators in enclosed spaces or too close to homes, potentially leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Retailer Cooperation and Lack of Manufacturer Response

The CPSC has collaborated with Walmart, eBay, and AliExpress to delist these products and prevent further sales to U.S. consumers. Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman stated these cords have no legitimate household use.

Notably, the China-based sellers have been unresponsive to CPSC requests for a recall or information regarding the products. Despite this lack of cooperation, the CPSC secured delisting from the e-commerce platforms.

Ongoing Monitoring and Consumer Safety

The CPSC continues to monitor online marketplaces and will take further action as needed to protect consumers. This proactive approach demonstrates the agency’s commitment to preventing the sale of hazardous products and prioritizing consumer safety.
