Kaiir Elam Lands with Kansas City Chiefs

Cornerback Kaiir Elam, previously considered a trade bust during his time with the Dallas Cowboys, has agreed to a free agency deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. This marks the fifth season and fourth team for the former first-round NFL draft pick.

Cowboys Trade and Subsequent Release

Elam initially entered the league as a first-round selection by the Buffalo Bills in 2022. He was traded to the Dallas Cowboys during the 2025 offseason in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick, with Dallas also receiving a 2025 sixth-round pick in return.

Early Expectations and Disappointment

Despite initial optimism, Elam struggled to perform for the Cowboys. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted Elam’s potential, stating, “He’s one of those guys that he’s got elite feet, elite change of direction, but I see him growing in the mental side of it.” However, this progress didn't translate to on-field success.

In 10 games with Dallas, Elam allowed a passer rating of 105 when targeted and conceded three touchdowns. His performance led to his release by the Cowboys in late November.

Brief Stint with the Tennessee Titans

Following his departure from Dallas, Elam signed with the Tennessee Titans. He appeared in four games for the Titans, showing improvement with a passer rating of 44.9 allowed when targeted.

Role with the Chiefs

Elam is expected to provide depth for the Chiefs' cornerback position. The team will likely utilize him in a supporting role, avoiding reliance on him as a primary starter. The signing offers Elam another opportunity to establish himself in the NFL.
