A South Florida city leader was found dead in her home on Wednesday, and her husband is in police custody, according to authorities.
Investigation into Bowen's Death
Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was discovered by police officers at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. The investigation began after authorities initiated a check on her well-being, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
Police Chief Brad Mock stated that the circumstances surrounding Bowen’s death are being investigated as a ‘domestic violence incident.’ He did not release further details at this time.
Husband in Custody
Stephen Bowen, the husband of the vice mayor, is currently in police custody, Chief Mock confirmed. Authorities are not seeking any other suspects in connection with the case.
Bowen's Career and Community Involvement
Nancy Metayer Bowen was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and was re-elected in 2024. She was appointed to a second one-year term as vice mayor by the commission in November 2023, as detailed on the city’s website.
Prior to her political career, Bowen worked as an environmental scientist and previously served on the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Bowen’s family confirmed her death through her social media accounts, stating: “Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose.”
The family’s statement continued, “She believed in bringing people together, listening to those she served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in her community… Her legacy will live on not only in the policies she helped shape, but in the countless lives she touched.”
The Coral Springs government Facebook page also honored Bowen, describing her leadership as “grounded in compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others.”
U.S. Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost, D-Fla., remembered Bowen as a “tireless advocate, a dedicated progressive leader, and a powerful voice for her community.”
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried shared that she had recently spoken with Bowen, stating, “Nancy was my friend and a friend to everyone who has ever believed that democracy was worth fighting for. The world is less bright without her in it.”
