Following the breakdown of their professional relationship, boxer Conor Benn has directly contradicted statements made by promoter Eddie Hearn regarding financial assistance.
The dispute centers on the legal expenses Benn incurred after testing positive for a banned substance in 2022. Hearn had previously asserted that Benn borrowed £500,000 from him to handle these fees, which Hearn claimed had since been repaid.
Benn's Denial of Financial Support
Conor Benn, 29, has firmly stated that he managed all his own legal costs stemming from the drug test failure announcement made in February.
Speaking out about the difficult period, Benn emphasized the personal burden he carried. "Guess who it all fell on? Me. It all fell on me," he stated, asserting that the financial responsibility was entirely his.
Lack of Support During Legal Battles
Benn suggested that beyond financial matters, he received no external support during his prolonged legal challenges.
He elaborated on this isolation, saying, "No one called up and checked to see if I got food on the table. No one. I had to do that myself." This implies that the entire weight of the situation rested solely on his shoulders.
Future Relationship Status with Hearn
Despite the public disagreement and the end of their business arrangement, Benn expressed a desire to mend his personal relationship with Hearn.
Benn indicated a willingness to reconnect outside of professional dealings. "We'll speak when this is done. I want to speak to him. Outside of business, we're friends," he commented.
He acknowledged the public nature of their falling out, suggesting it might have impacted egos involved. Benn also left the door slightly ajar for potential future collaboration with Matchroom or DAZN.
Free Agency and Future Plans
Benn outlined his current contractual status, noting that any future arrangement might be limited. He mentioned the possibility of a "one-fight deal," after which he would become a free agent.
This would allow him flexibility to potentially work with Matchroom, remain with Zuffa, or manage his career independently. He suggested that pursuing a short-sighted approach was not his intention, implying the recent high-profile situation had its own value.
