Growing Memorial Honors Victims of Plainville Tragedy
A somber memorial continues to expand outside a residence in Plainville, Connecticut, following a devastating murder-suicide. Mourners are leaving flowers, cards, and tokens of remembrance for Felisha Matthews and her two young daughters.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, March 27, involving Felisha Matthews, her boyfriend Patrick King, and the two girls. Police confirmed that King fatally shot Matthews and her daughters before dying by suicide.
Details of the Tragic Discovery
Patrick King allegedly contacted his sister after the murders, informing her of his actions and stating his intention to die. Officers responded to the scene, which subsequently escalated into a prolonged standoff with law enforcement.
Despite attempts by a SWAT negotiator to secure a peaceful resolution, King refused to surrender. After officers breached an entry point, they discovered the bodies of the three victims inside.
Victims Identified in Murder-Suicide
The victims were identified as Felisha Matthews, age 31; her 4-year-old daughter, Ava King; and Mileena Matthews, Felisha’s 12-year-old daughter from a prior relationship. All three individuals had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The makeshift memorial decorating the front steps features springtime flowers, including tulips, Easter cards, and stuffed bunny rabbits, according to reports from WFSB.
Community Reacts to Sudden Loss
Over the weekend, neighbors decorated the surrounding area with pink ribbons to honor the memory of the three women. Neighbors noted that the family had only relocated to Plainville in January and were just beginning to establish friendships locally.
Kristen St Pierre shared that her daughter attended Middle School of Plainville with Mileena. She described Mileena as very friendly, despite being new to the school environment.
Support Offered to Students and Community
Plainville schools responded by providing grief counselors for students. Students also organized a coordinated effort to wear all black in memory of Mileena.
Felisha Matthews was previously employed as a 911 dispatcher for the city of Waterbury. One resident, Knox, expressed profound shock, stating, “I walk this neighborhood ... two to three times a day, you just never know when something could happen. Those poor, innocent children and that beautiful mother — I just don’t really have the words.”
Official Statements of Condolence
Christopher Wazorko, Chairman of the Plainville Town Council, issued a statement expressing deep sympathy. “Our hearts go out to the family’s friends and everyone in this community who is grieving and searching for answers,” Wazorko stated, as reported by the Hartford Courant.
Wazorko added, “The loss of life is deeply painful for this close-knit community, and we stand together in sorrow and compassion for all affected.” Another local, Niko, described the confusing scene that unfolded, noting the sudden appearance of multiple police vehicles and a SWAT truck.
