Commanders Enjoy Draft Flexibility After Roster Overhaul
Adam Peters, General Manager of the Washington Commanders, enters the NFL Draft with considerable options at his disposal. A significant roster overhaul has transformed glaring weaknesses into more manageable areas for improvement.
Aggressive Free Agency Strategy
The Commanders signed or restructured a league-leading 23 contracts this offseason. This aggressive approach was intentional, designed to provide Peters with greater flexibility during the draft. The team spent over $250 million in free agency, acquiring players like veteran left tackle Laremy Tunsil and edge rusher Odafe Oweh.
“Best Player Available” Approach
Speaking at the NFL Owners Meetings, Peters emphasized the team’s new approach. “We don’t have to pick a certain position... We’re in that position now,” he stated, signaling a clear intention to select the best player available regardless of position. This is a departure from last year’s draft, which focused heavily on addressing immediate needs.
Potential Draft Targets
With the No. 7 overall pick, Washington is positioned to select a highly-rated prospect. Potential targets include Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles, LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, and Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate. The availability of Styles may depend on the New York Giants’ draft strategy.
Trade-Down Possibility
Peters has also indicated openness to trading down from the No. 7 pick. The Commanders currently lack second- and fourth-round picks due to the trade for Laremy Tunsil. A trade with a team looking to move up could allow Washington to acquire additional mid-round selections.
Building a Sustainable Foundation
Ultimately, the Commanders’ strategy aims to build a sustainable foundation around quarterback Jayden Daniels. By prioritizing talent over immediate need, Peters aims to ensure that any new additions to the team are there based on their potential, not out of desperation.
