Colorado Buffaloes freshman safety Braylon Edwards is quickly making an impact, delivering a significant hit during a recent spring practice drill. The Buffaloes are currently preparing for the 2026 season through spring workouts.

Edwards Makes a Statement

A video surfaced showing Edwards, alongside linebacker Gage Goldberg, delivering a forceful hit on running back Richard Young (No. 9) during a practice play. The play highlighted Edwards’ physicality and willingness to make plays.

Player Profile

Braylon Edwards is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound safety from Duncanville, Texas. He was a three-star recruit, ranked as the No. 173 safety in the 2026 class according to 247Sports.

During his senior year at Duncanville High School in the 2025-26 season, Edwards recorded 89 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions.

Buffaloes Roster Construction

Colorado’s 2026 recruiting class currently ranks No. 67 nationally, according to On3. The class includes 18 high school commitments, with Edwards among them.

Only two recruits in the class have earned four-star ratings: edge rusher Domata Peko Jr. and linebacker Carson Crawford. To supplement the high school commitments, Colorado has been highly active in the transfer portal, securing 43 incoming transfers.

The Transfer Portal Era

Colorado has experienced both successes and challenges with its heavy reliance on the transfer portal since head coach Deion Sanders arrived in 2023. The strategy initially led to significant improvement.

Successes with Transfers

Cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State to Boulder, played key roles in transforming the Buffaloes. Colorado went from a one-win team in 2022 to a nine-win team in 2024.

Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy and was selected No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sanders was named the 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round.

Challenges of Portal Reliance

The reliance on one-year transfers can create challenges in team cohesion and consistency. This may have contributed to Colorado’s 3-9 record in the 2025 season, despite bringing in quarterback Kaidon Salter from Liberty.
