Stephen Colbert Questions Trump's Remaining Support
The Late Show host Stephen Colbert mocked supporters of former President Donald Trump during his monologue on Tuesday night. The segment followed the release of a University of Massachusetts Amherst poll revealing Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 33%.
Poll Numbers and Audience Reaction
Colbert noted that other poll numbers for the former president were also “pretty rough.” He stated, “On average, 47.2% of Americans strongly disapprove of him. There are still 22.4% who strongly approve of him.”
“Who Are You?”
The announcement of continued support prompted boos from the audience. Addressing the camera, Colbert asked, “Who are you?” He then delivered a satirical list of preferences, joking, “Well, I want gas to be expensive. I want the Kennedy Center blown up. And I know this is a pipe dream, but is there any way that maybe — maybe — we could get Denmark to hate us? Because I would just love it if the price of licorice went up, too.”
White House Response
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle responded to Fox News Digital, calling Colbert a “pathetic train wreck with no talent and terrible ratings,” and falsely claiming CBS had canceled his show and was “booting him off the airwaves.”
Recent Polling Data
A Fox News national poll conducted March 20–23 showed Trump with 41% approval and 59% disapproval, a negative 18-point margin. This was an increase from a 14-point margin in a previous Fox News poll conducted February 28–March 2.
History of Criticism
Colbert has consistently criticized Trump on his show, using strong language and even telling the former president to “go f--- yourself.” His commentary has become more pointed since the announcement that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will air its final episode in May.
Cancellation Accusations
Colbert and other liberal commentators have suggested that CBS and Paramount canceled the show to appease Trump.
