Colbert's 'April Fools!' Remark
Stephen Colbert opened his show with a satirical observation about Donald Trump’s recent national address. He jokingly stated, “Donald Trump, at 9 p.m., gave a national prime time address. It was concise, intelligent, and brought the nation together with shared purpose.”
Following the audience’s laughter, Colbert immediately clarified, “April Fools!” He added that Trump delivered the speech on the first night of Passover, suggesting, “So whether you’re Jewish or not, I recommend having had four glasses of wine…tapes too early and because “I put lamb’s blood around my TV so the speech would pass me by.”
Satire on Trump's Iran Policy
Mimicking the President
Colbert then mocked the administration’s stated purpose for the speech – an update on Iran. He imitated Trump saying, “My fellow Americans, we are ending our war in Iran. Let me back up. We’re doing a war in Iran. I forget why. Is it part of Venezuela?”
When questioned if this apparent confusion was intentional, Colbert responded, “Yes, it’s cunning! No one knows what Donald Trump is thinking. Not even Donald Trump.” He compared Trump to a goldfish, suggesting he maintains a “perfectly blank” mind to avoid revealing his thoughts.
SCOTUS Hearing Commentary
The comedian also addressed Trump’s recent appearance at a hearing regarding birthright citizenship. He described it as “mob boss level intimidation,” noting it was the first time a sitting president had attended such a hearing.
Colbert reported that the justices were not persuaded by the administration’s arguments, leading to a “humiliated Trump” leaving the hearing. He questioned whether the president was “humiliated or just confused?”
