The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) announced Thursday evening that layoff notices related to its Building Brighter Futures (BBF) school consolidation initiative will be issued no later than Tuesday, April 14. This announcement was communicated to all staff members within the district.
Layoffs and Administrative Reductions
The district will implement both layoffs and significant administrative reductions, including cuts within the CMSD Central Office staff. The exact number of positions affected has not been specified. CMSD and the Cleveland Teachers Union (CTU) are collaborating to minimize the impact on employees.
Collaboration with the Cleveland Teachers Union
While the CTU believes layoffs of teaching staff are not currently required, both the district and the union are committed to working together. Their joint efforts have already reduced the initial number of anticipated teacher layoffs, and they continue to explore options to lessen the impact. Affected staff will receive assistance with transitioning to new opportunities, either within or outside the district.
Building Brighter Futures Plan
The Building Brighter Futures plan was unanimously approved by the CMSD Board of Education in December. It is designed to save the district $30 million annually to address a projected $150 million deficit in the coming years.
Prioritizing Students and Academic Improvements
Dr. Warren Morgan, CMSD’s CEO, emphasized that the plan prioritizes students and aims to improve academic experiences. He stated that the consolidation will lead to more efficient resource allocation. The initiative includes a commitment to offering college and career pathways in every high school and enrichment courses – such as Algebra I, foreign languages, and band – in all elementary schools.
The district and CTU acknowledged the emotional impact of the announcement, recognizing the anxiety it will cause among staff, families, and the wider school community. They have committed to transparency and supporting affected staff throughout the transition.
