The Chicago Bulls organization made a swift decision to part ways with NBA guard Jaden Ivey. Ivey's tenure with the team concluded after only four games when the Bulls waived him on Monday, March 30.
Official Reason for Dismissal
In a statement released via social media, the Bulls cited "conduct detrimental to the team" as the official reason for releasing the 24-year-old, fourth-year professional.
While the team offered vague reasoning, the dismissal followed several highly publicized, erratic videos Ivey posted on his personal Instagram account.
Ivey's Controversial Instagram Rants
The immediate catalyst appeared to be an anti-LGBTQ+ rant Ivey delivered during an Instagram Live stream on Monday morning. During this broadcast, he heavily criticized the NBA for its celebration of Pride Month.
Ivey stated, "The world can proclaim LGBTQ, right? They proclaim Pride Month. And the NBA, they proclaim it. They show it to the world. They say, ‘Come join us for Pride Month, to celebrate unrighteousness.’ They proclaim it on the billboards. They proclaim it in the streets. Unrighteousness."'
This incident was preceded by other live videos where Ivey reportedly argued with followers. According to a Monday report by the Chicago Tribune, he accused several individuals of being "sinners for their beliefs and lifestyles."
Furthermore, in one comment captured by the Tribune, Ivey targeted religious views, writing, "Catholicism is a false religion. And is not the true Doctrine of Christ. does not lead to salvation in Jesus Christ."'
Coach Donovan Addresses Team Standards
Bulls Head Coach Billy Donovan addressed the situation during a press conference held before the team's 129-114 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Monday.
Donovan emphasized the necessity of maintaining professional standards within the organization. He noted, "I think there’s a certain level of standards and expectations that are here."
The coach stressed the importance of mutual respect among staff and players, who come from "all different walks of life." He added, "But one is, we’ve got to all be professional. I think there’s got to be a high level of respect for one another, and we got to help each other and then be accountable to those standards."'
Support and Player Welfare
Donovan also expressed concern for the overall well-being of his players, including Ivey. He stated his worry about what players might be experiencing privately.
"I think in this day and age, you have to be conscientious of all these guys may be going through things,” Donovan commented. He assured the public that the team provides resources, adding, "I think if any player reached out and said I need some help in this, we could help them."'
Jaden Ivey Responds to Waiving
Following his release, Jaden Ivey utilized Instagram once more to issue a rebuttal against the team's stated reason for his departure.
In a subsequent live stream, Ivey directly challenged the Bulls' assessment, claiming, "They’re lying saying my conduct is detrimental to the team. That’s a lie." He questioned his former coaches about his behavior as a teammate.
Ivey asserted that his public statements were solely focused on his faith, stating, "All I’m preaching about is Jesus Christ and they waived me. They say I’m crazy, right? I’m psycho." He concluded by insisting he had fulfilled his professional duties, adding, "I didn’t get myself waived. I was in the gym today. I was rehabbing, doing what was required of my job."'
