Severe Weather Threat Looms Over Chicago

Dangerous storms are expected to impact the Chicago area late Thursday, bringing with them the risk of tornadoes. The National Weather Service warns of potentially severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall.

Timing and Location of the Storms

The most significant threat period is between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday as a cold front moves through the region. The highest tornado risk is initially expected west and northwest of Chicago, with storms then moving eastward into the metropolitan area during the evening.

Wind Advisory in Effect

In addition to the thunderstorm threat, a wind advisory is in place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. Residents should be prepared for strong and gusty winds throughout the day.

Recent Severe Weather Activity

The greater Chicago area has experienced a heightened level of severe weather this year. Last month, the National Weather Service confirmed 12 tornadoes across Illinois and Indiana, including a deadly EF-3 tornado that struck Kankakee and Lake Village, Indiana.

In the summer of 2024, over 30 tornadoes touched down across the Chicago area in a single day, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to these events.

Impacts and Preparations

Roofing companies report a 200% increase in service calls and anticipate further demand as the severe weather season progresses. The CBS News Chicago First Alert Weather team emphasizes the rapidly changing conditions in the Midwest this time of year, underscoring the need for vigilance.

Additional Weather Concerns

Beyond tornadoes, the area has already faced flooding and large hail damage this spring. Additional rounds of rain and storms are forecast for Friday into Saturday, potentially leading to localized flooding.

White Sox Game Rescheduled

The Chicago White Sox home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been canceled due to the weather. The game has been rescheduled for Friday afternoon, and existing tickets and parking passes will be honored.

Looking Ahead

Drier and cooler weather is expected to return by Sunday into early next week, offering a respite from the recent severe weather pattern.
