Cherry Hill Public Schools approved a tentative budget last week for the 2026-27 school year, but the process was marked by “difficult” circumstances. The district is currently facing a $14.5 million budget deficit.
Addressing the Deficit
To compensate for the shortfall, the district is considering a 7.4% property tax increase. Additionally, the tentative budget includes the elimination of 72 positions, though specific details regarding which roles will be affected have not yet been released. Superintendent Kwame Morton is expected to provide further information next week.
Factors Contributing to the Budget Gap
Superintendent Kwame Morton explained that the deficit stems from several factors, including rising employee healthcare costs and a decrease in state aid. “We tried to present the most efficient, lean budget possible. We’ve gone through every line,” Morton told The Inquirer. “It’s difficult. It’s challenging.”
