Chelsea Instability Deepens as Second Star Eyes Spanish Exit
The recent international break has reportedly damaged Chelsea’s standing, as another key player has publicly hinted at a move away from Stamford Bridge. Left back Marc Cucurella has admitted an interest in returning to La Liga, following similar recent comments from teammate Enzo Fernández regarding Real Madrid.
Fernández's ongoing flirtation with the Spanish giants has already created uncertainty around his future, especially as the entire Chelsea project faces scrutiny. Cucurella, while stating he is not currently planning an exit, could not resist acknowledging his desire to play in Spain again.
Cucurella on Returning to Spain and Barcelona
“At the end of the day, Spain is always Spain,” Cucurella stated. “It’s my country and where I grew up, and you always think about going back, but I think I’d leave it for a few years.”
When specifically asked about a potential return to Barcelona, where his career started, the defender admitted the difficulty of declining such an offer. “Well, it’s clear that if something like that happens, it’s difficult to turn them down,” he remarked.
However, he stressed that any decision would involve more than just his own wishes. He added, “I’d also have to think about my family, maybe, what’s best for them or for all of us, but as I said before, I’m not thinking about that right now.”
Criticism Over Enzo Maresca's Departure
Tensions have been high at Stamford Bridge since manager Enzo Maresca was dismissed in January. Although on-pitch results were inconsistent, his exit was largely attributed to behind-the-scenes conflict with the sporting hierarchy operating under new ownership, BlueCo, since 2022.
Maresca was succeeded by Liam Rosenior, who is now facing intense pressure following a sequence of four consecutive defeats and a significant Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain. Cucurella strongly supported Maresca, echoing sentiments that parting ways with the manager was a mistake.
The Need for Process and Stability
Cucurella praised Maresca’s methods, noting, “With Enzo Maresca in charge, we were more stable, because we worked together for 18 months.” He emphasized the importance of time for implementing tactical ideas, stating, “You need a process for every player to understand what we need to do.”
He drew a parallel with successful clubs: “Look at Arsenal now, who are fighting for every trophy. They’ve been with Arteta for almost seven years and they have not won much. But that trust in the project gives rewards.”
The player highlighted the strong bond formed under Maresca, saying, “When a manager gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you’d die for him.” He felt the mid-season change was poorly timed. “The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”
Cucurella concluded that the current instability stems directly from this managerial shift, which forced a new manager in mid-season without adequate time to implement new systems.
Psychological Impact of Squad Building Policy
The recent 8-2 aggregate defeat against PSG was particularly embarrassing and amplified existing concerns about the squad’s composition. Chelsea officials have prioritized signing young, high-potential talents over experienced veterans, aiming for future resale value.
Tosin Adarabioyo (28) is currently the oldest player in the squad, just ahead of Cucurella (27) and Robert Sánchez. Cucurella acknowledged that this “win later” approach has a tangible psychological effect on players aiming for immediate success.
“Results like are always hard to take,” he commented after the PSG loss. “You are fighting and training every day only to realize, at the very end, that when games matter, we are still a bit away from the top level.”
While understanding the club’s policy of signing youth, he noted the discouragement this causes for those seeking major honors now. “To fight for major trophies such as the, you need more,” he asserted. “Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that. You need to find the balance between both worlds.”
