Addressing Protection Issues
The Los Angeles Chargers are prioritizing the protection of quarterback Justin Herbert following a difficult 2025 season that ended with a first-round playoff exit. Throughout that campaign, Herbert was frequently forced to scramble under heavy pressure, often absorbing significant hits from opposing pass rushers.
Speaking at the league meetings in Phoenix, head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed that while the team has made progress, the work on the offensive line is ongoing. "Feel really good," Harbaugh stated, noting that the team expects to make further moves through the remainder of free agency and the upcoming draft.
New Additions to the Roster
The Chargers have already secured two key pieces to stabilize the front line:
- Tyler Biadasz: The 28-year-old center, formerly of the Cowboys and Commanders, has impressed Harbaugh with his football IQ. Harbaugh described Biadasz as a "coach on the field" who possesses a rare ability to articulate complex concepts.
- Cole Strange: Expected to start at right guard, Strange joins the team after spending the 2025 season in Miami. Harbaugh noted that Strange’s familiarity with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s system made him an ideal fit for the roster.
Injury Recovery and Offensive Vision
The team is also looking toward a healthier 2026 season for its key starters. Harbaugh reported that tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are recovering well from season-ending injuries. Slater, in particular, is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation at the team's El Segundo facility.
Harbaugh expressed significant enthusiasm regarding the partnership between Justin Herbert and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. He noted that McDaniel’s approach to teaching the offense and identifying defensive coverages has been enlightening. "It is what I really thought it was, just a perfect combination of Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert," Harbaugh added.
