Capcom Strikes Again: Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sells 1 Million Copies on Launch Day Capcom continues its dominance in 2026 with the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which sold over a million copies on its first day. The game revives the samurai franchise after a 20-year hiatus, receiving high praise from critics and players alike. Capcom can't stop winning lately. While the company behind Street Fighter and Resident Evil has been hot for a while now, 2026 is looking like a banner year, starting with the overwhelming success of Resident Evil: Requiem. The return of its survival horror juggernaut was not only well reviewed as a potential early Game of the Year contender, but also became the fastest-selling game in franchise history, with over 5 million copies sold in its first five days and 8 million within its first six months. Then, in April, they released another acclaimed hit in Pragmata, an entirely new IP that seems poised to become a franchise itself after exceeding 2.5 million copies by the end of July. Now, it appears they have another big hit on their hands. Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released last week on September 4, marking the return of Capcom's long-dormant samurai franchise a full 20 years after Dawn of Dreams released on PlayStation 2, and so far, it's been thriving with critics and audiences. The dark fantasy title, casting players as Miyamoto Musashi on a journey through a corrupted Edo-period Kyoto infested with demons and other supernatural beings, currently holds an 85 score on Metacritic, along with a user score of 8.7, rivaling that of Pragmata and one of the company's other notable releases, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. It hasn't just been a critical success, though. On Steam, its concurrent player count hit an impressive high of 85,081, providing an early signal that the modern return of the series' hack-and-slash styling was selling well. Capcom has now officially confirmed that it's even more of a hit than expected. Despite being absent from modern consoles for years, the publisher announced that Way of the Sword sold an eye-watering 1 million copies on launch day alone. For reference, the previous bestseller in the series, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, only shipped 2.1 million units overall, putting the newest release just under halfway to that mark after just 24 hours. Assuming momentum keeps up, that should be an easy number to crack after such a strong start. The Onimusha franchise as a whole has also reached a new milestone thanks to that success, now reaching over 10 million copies sold since its inception in 2001
