Canada has pledged $270 million to support Ukraine’s military defense during the European Political Community summit held in Yerevan, Armenia. This latest contribution increases Canada’s total aid to Ukraine to $25.8 billion.

Strengthening International Partnerships

Prime Minister Mark Carney is focused on bolstering Canada’s international relationships, particularly through participation in the European Political Community summit. The summit itself is designed to foster strategic cooperation in areas like politics, security, and infrastructure.

Financial Commitment to Ukraine

The $270 million commitment, announced by Prime Minister Carney, underscores Canada’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion. This substantial financial aid is intended to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

Bilateral Meetings and High-Level Dialogue

Beyond the financial pledge, Prime Minister Carney engaged in a series of bilateral meetings to strengthen alliances and explore new cooperative opportunities. He expressed gratitude to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for the invitation to the summit.

Meetings were held with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa. A key meeting also took place with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, allowing for direct communication of Canada’s support.

Aid Allocation and Summit Focus

The $270 million will be used to procure essential military equipment from a pre-approved NATO list. This ensures the aid is effective and adheres to international standards.

The European Political Community summit serves as a crucial platform for coordinating international responses and demonstrating a united front against aggression. The summit also emphasizes the importance of infrastructure development for long-term European stability and economic recovery.

Canada’s actions demonstrate its commitment to multilateralism, democratic values, and international cooperation in addressing global challenges.
