California Air Quality Alert Issued
Thousands of residents in parts of California’s Coachella Valley and Imperial County have been urged to limit outdoor exposure and keep windows and doors closed due to elevated air pollution levels. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an air quality alert effective from Wednesday evening through Thursday night.
Affected Areas
The NWS alert specifically impacts communities within the Coachella Valley, including Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, and Coachella. Areas of Riverside County, as well as southwestern and western Imperial County, are also affected. This includes Mountain Spring, Coolidge Springs, Salton City, Winona, Coyote Wells, Ocotillo, Plaster City, El Centro, Calexico, Alamorio, and Brawley.
Cause of the Pollution
Windblown dust is identified as the primary cause of the harmful air quality. The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an advisory from March 31 to April 2, suggesting the dust may be linked to recent fire activity.
Health Concerns and Precautions
The NWS warns that when air quality is classified as “harmful,” everyone in the affected area can experience negative health effects. Particle pollution can trigger asthma attacks, exacerbate heart and lung disease symptoms, and increase the risk of lung infections.
Sensitive groups – including individuals with lung or heart disease, older adults, pregnant people, children, and those who spend significant time outdoors – are at greater risk. Residents are advised to limit the length and intensity of outdoor activities.
Recommendations for Residents
- Keep windows and doors closed.
- Avoid using candles, incense, grills, or indoor fires/wood-burning stoves.
- Refrain from using house fans or swamp coolers.
- Consider carpooling, public transport, or remote work to reduce vehicle emissions.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District noted that windblown ash particles are often visible in the air or on surfaces, advising residents to take precautions if they smell smoke or see ash.
