Broncos beat Chiefs 28-24 after Mahomes sack and late false start Denver sacked Patrick Mahomes on the final play to seal a 28-24 win over Kansas City, moving to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West. A late false start wiped out a Chiefs touchdown and Brittany Mahomes criticized the call. The Denver Broncos beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday when Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on fourth-and-goal from the 7-yard line on the final play of regulation at Empower Field at Mile High. The victory moved Sean Payton's team to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West, a half-game ahead of Andy Reid's Chiefs. The game turned on a false start called on Kansas City offensive tackle Jaylon Moore that wiped away what would have been the game-winning touchdown. The penalty pushed the Chiefs back five yards. On the next play, Mahomes was sacked to end the game.Brittany Mahomes Criticizes OfficialsBrittany Mahomes, the wife of the Kansas City quarterback, fumed at the officials on social media. You can't tell me you call that on the game winning TD, oh wait yeah I can cause it's us, she wrote on her Instagram Stories over a black screen, along with a smiling face emoji. Reid said the flag was correct. I saw him move his head, but I didn't see a false start, Reid said.He also pointed to the overall penalty count. We had over 100 yards in penalties and that puts you in a bad position all the way down to the touchdown right at the end to win the game, Reid said. We have to make sure we take care of that. Kansas City blew a double-digit lead in the second half. The Broncos scored 15 fourth-quarter points and took a 28-24 lead on a 5-yard Jonah Coleman touchdown run with 1 minute, 56 seconds remaining. Kicker Harrison Butker missed a critical field goal that opened the door for Denver's rally. After Coleman's score, Mahomes drove the Chiefs into prime position. He hit Travis Kelce for 32 yards and found Kenneth Walker for 6-yard gains.Chiefs Drive Collapses In Final MinutesWith 12 yards to cover and 66 seconds left, Walker took a shovel pass for 8 yards. Mahomes then handed to Walker, who plowed down to the 1-yard line but was stopped by a sturdy tackle from All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II, who had just returned from an ankle injury that forced him to miss three games. After a Chiefs timeout, Mahomes was flushed right on second-and-goal from the 1 and threw the ball away. The Broncos, forced deep into their depth chart after injuries to both starting safeties, needed a stop. JL Skinner provided it, knifing through and stoning Walker for no gain. The special teams stalwart had played two defensive snaps this season and 56 in his career. With 4 seconds left and one final snap, Mahomes briefly surveyed the field but was flushed by pressure off the right edge from Jonathon Cooper and upfield progress by Nik Bonitto.Roach dragged him down. Payton threw his hands above his head. It was the latest dramatic finish for Denver, which has won 15 straight one-score regular-season games dating to last year. Of Payton's now 200 regular-season wins, few have been more dramatic.Denver Crowd Supports Dramatic FinishThe crowd of 76,559 at Empower Field played a role. The crowd is the best in the world, inside linebacker Alex Singleton, who had 14 tackles, said after all but 176 who purchased a ticket showed up. Payton had written the number 48 in blue marker on a whiteboard in the locker room. His original plan was to deliver his pregame speech, pick up a folding chair, and smash it through the number, Bob Knight style. These fold up chairs are much heavier, Payton said. So I did a test run and I kind of lifted it and I'm like, well, the only thing I could throw then would be the hand sanitizer stand. Outside linebacker Que Robinson summed up the finish. It was ball out or go home, Robinson said. And we weren't going home without that dub. A loss would have left Denver functionally three games back in the division. Instead, the Broncos lead the AFC West. A 31-10 Week 1 loss no longer looms over them, even if questions remain in the season's second half.Broncos Take Command Of AFC WestDenver spent half of September, all of October and the opening hours of November slugging its way back. Now the race is on, and running from the front is far better than needing somebody in the distance to fade back. Mahomes had seemed to have a vice grip on the division.A nine-year stretch as the AFC West's power brokers was broken last year by the Broncos, and Kansas City was poised to resume its run when Mahomes threw a dart of a touchdown to Rashee Rice. The false start changed that.
