Singer and actress Brandy, 47, is steadfast in her decision to keep the final, personal note from her late mentor, Whitney Houston, private. This revelation comes as she discusses her close relationship with the iconic singer in her new memoir, Phases, which launched on Tuesday, March 31.
A Cherished Bond and a Final Gift
The memoir details the profound connection between Brandy and Houston, whom she considered her "North Star." Their relationship began after meeting at the 1995 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, an encounter that initially left a young Brandy so nervous she fled the scene.
This initial awkwardness blossomed into a regular mentorship. Brandy addresses the public's curiosity regarding the note Houston gave her just one day before her untimely passing in 2012 at age 48.
Preserving Intimacy Over Public Demand
Brandy acknowledges the intense desire from fans to know the contents of the message. "I know that people weave their own stories from my silence," she writes in Phases.
However, she emphasizes the need for personal boundaries. Brandy states, "But I hope you can understand — after giving so much of ourselves to the world, I want to keep some small piece of our bond untouched by the world."
The Day Before the Tragedy
The day Brandy received the note, she and Monica, 45, were rehearsing their duet "The Boy Is Mine" for a pre-Grammys gala hosted by Clive Davis. Houston made an unexpected appearance while the duo was meeting their band and preparing for press interviews.
Brandy recalls Houston arriving with damp clothes, suggesting an "impulsive swim." Houston expressed her support, saying, “I had to come see my babies! Y’all are gonna kill it.”
Observations and Final Moments
Houston watched a quick run-through of the song before returning an hour later with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown. Brandy observed that Houston appeared "under the influence" while they finished interviews, noting that she felt "Whitney was becoming the story" amidst judging strangers.
After the interviews concluded, Houston approached Brandy, whispered, “This is for you,” and gave her the note, followed by a kiss on the cheek.
The Last Conversation and Devastating News
Later that evening, Brandy spoke with Houston on the phone. She described the call as emotional, noting flashes of the "old Whitney" as Houston discussed getting back into the studio and finding redemption with Sparkle. Houston promised, “‘I’m gonna be better,’ she promised as our call wound down, and in that moment, I believed her with every fiber of my being. ‘You’ll see. This is just a season, not the whole story.’”
Tragically, Houston died the following day, February 11, 2012, which was also Brandy’s 33rd birthday. Houston accidentally drowned under the influence of cocaine and other substances.
The Aftermath of Loss
Brandy recounts waking up with a strange "hot, radiating itch" in her throat but was cleared by a doctor who attributed it to nerves. Upon returning to her hotel at 3:45 p.m., she felt a pit in her stomach.
Her mother, Sonja Norwood, delivered the news of Houston's death. Brandy vividly recalls the shock: “I felt my body go limp, then I fell to the floor, convulsing with sobs.”
Despite the tragedy, the pre-Grammys gala proceeded that night because Whitney’s family gave Clive Davis their blessing. Brandy and Monica performed out of respect for Houston's love for the event.
During that difficult evening, the duo made a "tear-soaked promise to keep Whitney’s memory alive" and to honor her legacy, showcasing "what real talent coupled with real pain looked like."
