Celebrated Korean director Bong Joon Ho is venturing into 3D animation with a new project, officially titled Ally. The multi-Oscar winner and his producers revealed the title, story summary, a target release date, and a first-look image on Thursday.
Project Details and Release Date
Bong Joon Ho has been developing Ally since 2019, keeping details closely guarded until now. The film is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027, with a worldwide theatrical release planned for later that year.
Story Overview: Ally the Piglet Squid
Ally centers around a curious and endearing piglet squid living in the uncharted depths of the South Pacific Ocean. She dreams of seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary.
A Journey to the Surface
When a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, Ally’s peaceful world is disrupted. She embarks on an extraordinary journey to the surface with her colorful and loyal companions. The story explores themes of friendship and courage, and the impact of encounters between humans and marine life.
Creative Team and Production
Bong Joon Ho co-wrote the screenplay with a 36-year-old filmmaker. He has a history of collaborating with younger screenwriters, including his former production assistant, Han Jin Won.
Seo Woo-sik is producing the film, marking his third collaboration with Bong Joon Ho. Financing and distribution are being handled by CJ ENM, Penture Invest, and Pathé, with Barunson C&C overseeing production.
Inspiration and Artistic Vision
The project is inspired by remarkable real-life marine creatures and Claire Nouvian’s photo book. Bong Joon Ho personally hand-drew the entire storyboard, a practice he follows for all his films. He described the production process as “a very wild and tough job.”
Budget and Distribution
Korean industry sources suggest the film’s budget could reach $60 million, potentially making it the most expensive film ever produced in the country. CJ ENM and Penture Invest will manage distribution in several key territories, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, and Indonesia. Pathé will handle distribution in other regions.
