Long Island Republican Bruce Blakeman has launched his 2026 campaign for New York Governor with a slogan echoing a familiar political phrase: “Make New Yorkers Happy Again.” The Nassau County Executive is seeking to increase his visibility statewide and close a polling gap against current Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.
Campaign Strategy and Polling Data
Blakeman’s campaign strategy centers on presenting a contrast to Governor Hochul’s policies. He aims to appeal to voters by promising to prioritize New Yorkers’ needs. “They want a governor that’s going to care about them. They want a governor that will put New Yorkers first,” Blakeman stated.
Recent polling data indicates a challenge for Blakeman. A Siena poll shows him trailing Hochul by 13 percentage points. However, Blakeman’s campaign released an internal poll suggesting a closer race, with a 9-point gap. His team claims to be gaining traction in suburban areas and among city voters.
Focus on New York City
Blakeman has specifically targeted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, asserting that as governor, he would be the only one capable of limiting the mayor’s power. He criticized Governor Hochul for being aligned with Mamdani and argued she would not take action to address his policies. “The only one that can stop Zohran Mamdani is the governor, and Kathy Hochul has demonstrated that she’s in bed with him,” Blakeman said.
Nassau County as a Blueprint
The Republican hopeful, endorsed by President Trump, intends to replicate his successes in Nassau County across the state. He highlighted his record of “tough on crime” policies, four years without a tax increase, and the rejection of a $150 million tax hike proposed by his predecessor, Laura Curran.
Fundraising Disparity
Despite his plans, Blakeman faces a significant fundraising disadvantage. As of the latest filings, Governor Hochul has over $20 million in her campaign war chest, while Blakeman has raised $3.2 million. He acknowledged that closing the gap will require substantial fundraising efforts.
Blakeman also criticized Hochul’s tenure, labeling it a “failure” marked by high taxes, excessive regulation, and policies he believes have driven residents to leave New York. He stated he has spoken with New Yorkers who have relocated to Florida.
