Binance Suspends Base Network Deposits and Withdrawals for Cobalt Upgrade Binance will pause Base network token deposits and withdrawals around 17:00 UTC on September 30, 2026, for the Cobalt upgrade and hard fork, as trading continues normally. Binance will suspend deposits and withdrawals of tokens on the Base network at about 17:00 UTC on September 30, 2026, ahead of the network's Cobalt upgrade and hard fork. Base is an Ethereum layer 2 network incubated by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. The upgrade is expected to take effect around 18:00 UTC on the same day. The exchange said trading of tokens on the Base network will not be impacted. Binance will handle all technical requirements involved for all users during the transition.Deposits and withdrawals for tokens on the Base network will be reopened once the upgraded network is deemed to be stable. The exchange did not give a specific time for the resumption.Cobalt Upgrade Changes on Base NetworkThe Cobalt upgrade brings improvements to the B20 token standard. It allows users to pay transaction fees in B20s, schedule multiplier updates, transfer blocked simplification, and adds new Union and Intersect policies. The upgrade also introduces validity transactions. Dynamic Upgrades brought by Cobalt add an Ethereum smart contract that stores upgrade timestamps for Base nodes. Nodes can query the contract and apply changes live.Cobalt also changes how new Trusted Execution Environment signers are registered. AWS Nitro attestations can now be trustlessly verified fully onchain using checked P-384 hints, replacing the RISC Zero and Boundless proving flow.Denim Upgrade Planned for October 2026A separate upgrade called Denim is planned for October 2026. It will introduce native blocks at a 200ms cadence, onchain millisecond time through BaseTime, and millisecond-resolution RPC timestamps. The Cobalt and Denim upgrades together signal Base's push to improve speed and verification for users. The network is an Ethereum layer 2, meaning it settles transactions on the Ethereum mainnet while processing them off-chain for lower costs and faster speeds.Base was incubated by Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Layer 2 networks have become a major part of the Ethereum ecosystem because they reduce congestion and fees on the main chain.Context for Exchange UsersTemporary deposit and withdrawal suspensions are common when a blockchain network performs a hard fork. Exchanges pause transfers to avoid failed or lost transactions while nodes are being updated. For Binance users, trading remains open, which means holders can still buy and sell tokens on the Base network during the window. Only the movement of tokens into and out of the exchange is affected. The upgrade work involves technical requirements that Binance will handle on behalf of all users. Reopening depends on the network being stable after the fork.Base has drawn attention in the broader crypto market as a low-cost venue for decentralized applications and token activity. The B20 token standard and validity transactions are aimed at giving developers and users more flexibility when interacting with the chain.Dynamic node upgrades reduce the need for manual coordination, because nodes can read upgrade timestamps from a smart contract and apply changes live. Onchain attestation verification for TEE signers is intended to strengthen trust assumptions around how those signers are registered.Users should watch for an official Binance announcement confirming when Base network deposits and withdrawals resume. Until then, transfers to and from the exchange on that network will remain paused.
