Billy Porter on Shifting Industry Landscape
Actor Billy Porter has expressed concern over a perceived decline in opportunities for artists focused on progressive themes. He warned that the wave of 'performative wokeness' may be receding, leading to fewer roles for those who champion diversity and inclusion.
Porter’s Experience and Observations
Speaking with Rev. Al Sharpton on MS NOW’s PoliticsNation, Porter described benefiting from a period of increased focus on representation. “As a Black, gay, out artist, I caught the wave of what we now know as performative wokeness,” he stated. “I caught the wave of being in the center of that very progressive space. And I crashed through glass ceilings that were concrete.”
Connection to the Trump Administration
Porter also participated in the ‘No Kings’ demonstrations outside the Trump-Kennedy Center over the weekend. The protests were sparked by the Kennedy Center board’s decision to add former President Donald Trump’s name to the performing arts center. Demonstrators argued that policies enacted during the Trump administration threaten artists’ First Amendment rights.
Decline in Opportunities
Porter noted a tangible shift in the entertainment industry, impacting his own career. “I have noticed the opportunities slowly drying up for the work that I do,” he said. He observed that while certain types of programming remain prevalent, projects focused on diverse stories and marginalized communities are becoming less common.
Concerns About Artistic Freedom
The Emmy-winning actor, known for his role as a gender-neutral Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, warned that authoritarian governments often target the arts. “Authoritarian governments go after the arts first,” Porter asserted. “That is dangerous for fascists, and they know it. And that’s why they attack us first.”
Call to Vigilance
Porter urged activists to “stay vigilant” in the face of these changes. He emphasized the power of art to effect change, stating that this power is precisely what makes it a target for those seeking to suppress dissenting voices.
Porter’s Career Highlights
Billy Porter is a veteran of stage and screen, recognized for his work on the FX series Pose and his upcoming role in Sunrise on the Reaping, a spin-off of The Hunger Games. He also won a Tony Award in 2013 for his performance in Kinky Boots.
