Bill Self Confirms Return to Kansas Basketball
Bill Self will continue his storied coaching career at the University of Kansas, announcing his return to the Jayhawks’ sideline for the 2026-27 season. The decision comes after considering retirement, particularly in light of recent health concerns.
Commitment to the Jayhawks
“With renewed clarity and the ongoing support from our administration, I remain focused and committed to Kansas basketball competing for a national championship,” Self stated. He also expressed his excitement to return to Allen Fieldhouse, anticipating the energy of the team’s passionate fanbase.
Health Challenges and Recovery
Self has faced several health issues in recent years. He was hospitalized in 2013 due to chest tightness and balance problems, requiring the placement of two stents to address blocked arteries. He underwent another stent insertion in July 2025 after experiencing “concerning symptoms.”
Recent Hospitalization and Game Absence
Despite these challenges, Self continued to coach the Jayhawks this year. He did miss one game in January against Colorado as a precautionary measure, requiring a hospital visit. Following the team’s loss to St. John’s in the NCAA Tournament, questions arose regarding his future plans.
Looking Ahead to the 2026-27 Season
“I’ll get back and visit with the family,” Self said, via ESPN. “I’ve had, obviously, some issues off the court health-wise. And that will be discussed. But I love what I do. I want to feel good while I’m doing it, though.”
A Legacy of Success
Bill Self began his head coaching career in the 1993-94 season with Oral Roberts, followed by positions at Tulsa and Illinois before joining Kansas in 2003-04. During his 23 seasons with the Jayhawks, he has achieved a remarkable 648-167 record in 815 games.
Championships and Tournament Appearances
Self has led Kansas to two national championships, including a recent victory in 2022, and four Final Four appearances. His overall career record as a head coach stands at 855 wins across 33 seasons, with 27 NCAA Tournament appearances.
With the NCAA transfer portal opening on April 7, Self will immediately focus on building a competitive roster for the upcoming season, aiming for a deeper run in March Madness.
