Bexar County Man Sentenced to Life for Child Abuse
A Bexar County man has received a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the continuous sexual abuse of a child, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday.
John Xavier Garcia was convicted in January 2026. Following the conviction, 186th District Court Judge Kristina Escalona handed down the life sentence, according to a recent news release.
Additional Charges and Sentencing Details
In addition to the life sentence, Judge Escalona imposed a further 20-year term for the charge of indecency with a child by contact. The abuse perpetrated by Garcia began when the victim was approximately nine years old.
The pattern of abuse continued until the victim reached about 11 years of age, which is when the victim finally reported the crimes. Evidence presented during the trial was substantial, including the victim's direct testimony.
Evidence Presented in Court
The prosecution utilized several key pieces of evidence to secure the conviction. This evidence included counseling records detailing the abuse over time.
Furthermore, messages exchanged between Garcia and the victim, dating up to the time of his arrest, were also entered into the trial record. These communications corroborated the victim's account.
District Attorney Comments on Verdict
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales issued a statement regarding the severity of the ruling. He emphasized that the sentence reflects the gravity of these offenses and their enduring impact on survivors.
Gonzales commended the immense courage required for the victim to come forward publicly. He affirmed that his office remains dedicated to safeguarding children and ensuring offenders face full accountability for their actions.
