The $30 million art show in the palace
A major contemporary art show, Freiraum Kunst, has opened at Berlin's Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the German President , featuring works by leading artists and offering unprecedented public access before an eight-year renovation.
The show, organized by the city's Academy of Arts, transforms the historic 18th-century paalace into a temporary gallery featuring works by renowned artists such as Katharina Grosse, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Monica Bonvicini.
The exhibition includes a diverse range of media, from video and audio installations to photography and traditional oil paintings.
Steinmeier's endorsement
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier , who will vacate the residence next year after his second term ends , endorsed the project , stating that art without freedom loses its social relevance and free art without criticism loses its capacity for self-criticism .
The palace is scheduled for extensive renovations lasting eight years, including roof repairs, new air conditioning, and upgraded offices, prompting this one-time opportunity to open its doors to the public.
A glimpse into the presidential home
Visitors can explore the normally restricted state rooms by booking free tickets online; demand was so high that the booking website crashed shortly after launch.
The exhibition runs from Friday until June 28, offering a rare glimpse inside the presidential home .
Artists' reflections on power and tradition
Artists were given creative freedom to engage with the political space.
Notable pieces include El Bocho's oversiized portrait "Die Bundespräsidentin" (The Female President) and "Die Alten" (The Old Ones), prompting reflection on Germany's lack of a female president.
Karin Sander placed a 36-centimeter plaster sculpture of Steinmeier in the "political speeches room," preserving the room's functionality for any urgent addresses.
The work aims to dialogue with the ceremonial and historical weight of the location.
