Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Startup
Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence company founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck. The deal, potentially worth up to $600 million, will see Netflix integrate InterPositive’s technology into its original content creation process.
AI Focused on Cost Reduction
Affleck previously expressed views on the potential for AI to streamline visual effects production, stating, “Maybe it shouldn’t take a thousand people to render something.” InterPositive’s technology, patented in 2024, focuses on reducing production expenses, with potential savings of up to 50% in visual effects budgets, as well as reductions in set dressing and background actor costs.
Patent Details and 'AI Ambassadors'
The patent details largely concern the technical aspects of AI-driven shot composition. A portion of the patent also outlines a strategy for recruiting “ambassadors” to promote AI adoption among directors. The stated goal is to “enhance the creative process without supplanting the creative vision and direction of human filmmakers.”
Shifting Messaging Around AI's Role
Affleck’s public messaging regarding his company has recently shifted. He now emphasizes the importance of supporting “creators” – specifically roles he has held himself, such as writing, directing, and acting. This is a change from earlier discussions centered on “cost” concerns.
Affleck's Statements on Human Judgment
In a statement following the acquisition, Affleck said, “We need to preserve what makes storytelling human, which is judgment.” This statement has drawn scrutiny given the potential for AI to displace skilled labor in below-the-line production roles.
Previous Concerns About Visual Effects Jobs
During a 2024 CNBC appearance, Affleck voiced concerns about the future of the visual effects industry, stating, “I wouldn’t like to be in the visual effects business. They’re in trouble because what used to cost a lot of money is going to cost a lot less. And it’s going to hammer that space, and it already is.”
