A three-day Barbie Dream Fest event in Florida left many attendees feeling disillusioned, falling far short of advertised expectations. The event, organized by Mischief Management in Fort Lauderdale, aimed to provide fans with an immersive experience into the world of Barbie.
Promises Unfulfilled
Jacqueline Kerr, a 32-year-old attendee from Florida, arrived on Friday with elaborate, handmade costumes inspired by classic Barbie looks. However, she and her friend were disappointed by the reality of the event. “I was so excited to have an event where I could finally put on my most Barbie-esque outfits and have an excuse to wear them without looking like a fool,” Kerr said. “We were so disillusioned after that first day.”
Empty Convention Center and Limited Activities
Hundreds of attendees took to social media to express their dissatisfaction, describing a largely empty convention center with bare concrete walls. Promised attractions, such as an ’80s-themed roller-skating party, an interactive Barbie Dream House, and a bicycle course, were significantly underwhelming. The bicycle course featured only four small bikes with training wheels, suitable for young children. A makeshift skating rink was set up with barricades, and the glam bar was closed by the second day.
Celebrity Appearances and Vendor Concerns
Despite the lackluster environment, the event did feature appearances from celebrities like Serena Williams and Angel Reese, as well as Mattel designers. However, Kerr noted that these speaking events were often held before mostly empty audiences.
Vendor Disappointment
Brielle Cenci, a vendor who traveled from New Jersey with her mermaid hair extension business, described the event as a “ghost town.” She paid several thousand dollars for a booth and reported poor communication from organizers. “It felt like a farmers market,” Cenci said. “It was a ghost town. It felt awkward for the people attending, because it was so silent and empty... We were just as in the dark about the event as the attendees were.”
Refunds and Brand Challenges
Mischief Management has confirmed it is issuing full refunds to all ticket holders, which Kerr was told would process in three to four weeks. Tickets ranged from $69 for a day pass to $449 for a 3-day VIP experience.
Mattel's Response
A spokesperson for Mattel, which licensed the Barbie brand to Mischief Management, stated, “We want every fan experience to be an excellent one.” The event’s struggles come at a challenging time for the Barbie brand, as Mattel has faced declining sales and recently announced layoffs of 65 employees in May, following 89 layoffs in January, despite a boost from the 2023 ‘Barbie’ movie.
